Penn Jillette and Ray Teller met in the mid 70′s and over many films and TV show appearances still had the house leaving amazed. Their cable show “Bulls**t pertained to myths that folks again were being deceived not just by “trickery” but companies and products, the paranormal, religion, politics and even conspiracy theories. Their “magic” worked, for the show aired for eight seasons on Showtime and was nominated for 11 Emmy’s.

The long time Vegas residents of the “Rio” took off twelve days to entertain other parts of the country that can’t come to them to be entertained on an incomparable level of no deception and no diversions. Eight of their eleven illusions consisted of random folks from the huge living room at the MGM. Yes random, no “plants” as Penn orated about no such thing as esp, psychis, and other forms of trickery. He went on to even display Teller doing a diversion of a cigarette being lit from separate angles to fool the public.

Two unique parts of their performance that standout are the burning of the American flag and its re-appearance blowing in the wind, and Teller’s famous “Rose Shadow”. These are the signatures of this duo that have made them renown illusionists. In closing Penn sat on the stage and described how he started as a “fire eater” and explained how it is not a trick, but the real deal as the closing of the mouth cuts off the oxygen and thus no flame.

It was great to see no levitation, women being sawed in half and someone handcuffed in a tank of water. After the show both men were in the lobby signing autographs and taking peoples cell phones and taking the pics as patrons were in awe of the Philly, Pa. [Teller] and the Greenfield, Ma. [Penn] hosting the largest “meet and greet” ever.

A special thanks to the MGM & Foxwoods staff and security that made this article possible for you with their hospitality and kindness. On the venue next at The “Grand” is May 24th, with ”An Evening of Funk” with Parliment, Morris Day, and The Ohio Players. The next night on Saturday the 25th it is a no brainer with Dana Carvey, Dennis Miller, and Kevin Nealon–purchase tics on line from Foxwoods.

Rockland’s infrastructure is second to none with our reservoir expansion and high water quality, our town sewage system, curbside trash pick up, our leading role in solar energy in our schools and the new Beech Hill solar array. Our recycling center with its free dirt and expanded Sunday hours of operations. Our increased bond rating and fully funded budgets. Our commitment to our library, to open space, to recreation, conservation and revitalization are all second to none on the South Shore. Our restaurants and hotels, our top-ranked nursing facilities and senior living communities, like Leisurewoods, Rockland Glen and Beech Wood are all hidden gems in Rockland. Our many churches from Holy Family to Calvary Chapel, and our many civic organizations from the Eagles to the Knights, our Food Pantry, Meals on Wheels and a dozen other programs that help those in need. Our volunteers and everyday citizens who get up every day and work hard to make Rockland a better place.

Yes, this Zip Trip is going to show thousands of people why our motto is:

Rockland, A Great Place To Live!

Why of course it is Robert Clark Seger of Lincoln Park, Mi. [10 miles South of Detroit].

Seger graced the 120′ stage of the Mohegan Sun with the original Silver Bullet Band [1974] and for 2 hours and 20 songs every seat was empty. Everyone was standing and became Bob Seger themselves singing in the largest shower in the world. From “You’ll Accompany Me” [1st] to “Rock and Roll Never Forgets” [double encore] became a flashback for many of their past. And not surprising there were folks of all ages holding up cell phones, brewski’s, and I even saw a ‘glow stick” from a Frankie Valli show.

I don’t know how to categorize Seger’s “genres”. keep in mind, San Fran based Creedance, Clearwater was classified as “Swamp” music. So “HEAR” it goes–POP= Old Time Rock and Roll [Cruise in his BVD's]-BLUES=Turn The Page—Country= Against The Wind—Rock= Travelin’ Man-Beautiful Loser—Heartland=Like a Rock—Misc=Katmandu.

Like all bands the early years were difficult. It was The Bob Seger System that in 69′ released “Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man. This soon to be classic received great radio play in the Mid-West and also featured Glen Frey [Eagles] on vocals and guitar. The SBB was formed in 74′ and “Live” in 76′ was released [recorded at Cobo Hall-Detroit over two nights] and blossomed to multi platinum sales and was the first of 5 albums in a 6 year period.

Seger took some years off in the 90′s and into the new century to rear his family in a township 25 miles Northwest of Detroit. Seger is in his 2nd marriage and has a son [Cole-21] and daughter [Samantha-18]. Many people think that “Like A Rock” was written for the Statue Of Liberty [ "I stood proud, I stood tall ] or the fall of the Detroit economy [ "Working for peanuts, not a dime to spare"]–In reality after his first marriage [1 year] he dated a lady for 11 years and they parted. Therefore the song relates to his 20 year past and windshield future. The song was contracted by “GM Motors” for years and he can finally publicly sing it as he wrote the tune at an age of 38.

My favorite song in his oral library was “Roll Me Away”…It is a play it, and crank it in the Mustang. This lengthy review is a tribute to the definition of Rock and Roll, sorry Tool, System of The Down and Rob Zombie. “Get Out Of Denver” was released as many times as Lindsay Lohan, 5. And the only song played MORE than “Old Time Rock and Roll” is “Crazy”, sung in 62′ by Patsy and written by Wille.

Ever since the horrific events of April 15th, there have been many benefits arranged to help raise money for the victims of this tragedy. Besides the 3 who were killed in the attacks and the MIT officer who was killed, there were also hundreds who were injured to one extent or another. These people have started to face an uphill battle to get back to as normal a life as possible. The sad reality of this is that the medical bills that have arisen from the injuries at the attacks will not be going anywhere anytime soon. This is why it is so important to help out those folks.

I attended one such benefit this past Sunday afternoon at The C-Note on Nantasket Beach in Hull. The event was organized by Randy Connolly, front man of the band The Krazy Ivans. His band was joined by the acoustic due Bonfire and The Dave Foley Band. I did not get a total of the donations that was raised, but I believe it was in the $300 range from a 50-50 raffle and some silent auction items.

First up was Bonfire. Bonfire is Billy Mahoney and Stephen North. They also play in the country band Tattoo Cowboy who have appeared at Player’s a few times since their inception this past February. Billy and “Northy” combine smooth harmonies along with their keen guitar work for an enjoyable experience. These two guys are a couple of the hardest working musicians on the South Shore. This Sunday was their 3rd night in a row playing out either as Bonfire or with their Tattoo Cowboy brethren. Any opportunity you have to see either act is well worth your while.

Next up was The Dave Foley Band. It was my first time seeing these guys, but I’ve heard great things about them. They focus country, rockabilly and rock and roll back from the 60′s and do it with a fun flair. The band is Dave Foley on guitar and vocals, Rich Holbrook on the upright bass and Duke on drums. I’m sorry that I couldn’t remember or locate Duke’s last name. They usually stick up to the Boston area, but do play on the South Shore on occasion. They are very entertaining and accomplished as I believe Dave and Rich have been playing together since the mid-late 90′s from what I’ve been able to ascertain. They are another group that is a sure-fire bet to have a great night out dancing the night away.

The last band was The Krazy Ivans. This is the band that is fronted by the event organizer, Randy Connolly. The rest of the band is Fred “fj Roundtwo” Meltzer on drums, Mark Silva on guitar and Mike Travers on bass. The Krazy Ivans have been around for a few years now and have had changes in personnel during that time, but this incarnation seems to have hit the mark. They play classic rock from bands such as Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, The Black Crowes and Cheap Trick. The have a lot of energy and thrive on crowd interaction to help make for a fun night out.

BOSTON Local Actors/Producers, Michelle Romano and Jimmy Scanlon are proud to announce that their feature film, “Milwood” will be premiering at the prestigious Festival de Cannes. The Festival will take place from May 15th-26th in Southern France. “Milwood” was filmed this past year in New England over the course of 26 days. The majority of the filming took place in historical Rockland, Mass.
“Milwood” was Produced by Michelle Romano’s Production Company, Roman Media. The film was directed by Jimmy Scanlon and Evan Goldman. Romano will be attending the Festival de Cannes with Co-Producer, Gabriel Schmidt of Swimming Wings Productions, as well as several members of the cast and crew.

Romano and Scanlon met six years ago while working on an independent film project in Massachusetts. Their on-screen chemistry was instant and garnered them industry recognition. They continued to work together as co-stars in several feature films, short films, and commercials during the years that followed. After relocating to Los Angeles, Romano began to focus on developing her Production Company, Roman Media, while Scanlon began to focus more on his Writing. The two decided to return home to Massachusetts where they would produce, and star in Scanlon’s thriller, “Milwood.”

The Massmutual Center in Springfield, Ma. continued its surge in 2013 bringing the concert scene back to the downtown area last Tuesday by bringing a trio of “classic rockers” to the Home of Basketball.

From beginning to end, it was a near capacity house standing singing rock and ballads from the yesteryear, whether having heard it on one’s own radio or at their folks house as a teen. This trifecta of performers displayed energy levels that would have made John Denver retire.

Patriotic Nugent opened and wasted no time having people cover their kids ears, for his prominence in profanity has NOT grown old as he has (65+ and 6,500 concerts). He, as usual, was loyal. He demanded all those involved in the Boston Marathon tragedy be put in a “STRANGLEHOLD” to cheers of a loud crowd.

The Detroit hard rocker was followed by an extremely energized Kevin Cronin and R.E.O. Speedwagon. From the U of Illinois in Champaign, they can still “bring it”. From “Time For Me To Fly, “Roll With The Changes”, Ridin’ Out The Storm [dedicated to Boston] to the first three piano notes of “Keep On Loving You”, the MMC was like a massive chorus. R.E.O.’s Hi Fidelity LP produced four hit singles and sold 10 million [yes] copies

Closing out the loud, pump- fisting “soiree” was another Illinois band, STYX. The Chi-town based performers were around before electricity [early 60's], but changed members more than Clapton, Winwood, Mayall, Stewart and so on. It was like being at the Mohegan Sun. Styx “Grand Illusion” LP was their 7th album, and you guessed it… it was released on 7/7/77. The only downfall was that “Come Sail Away” reached #8 on the charts as The “Illusion” sold 3 million copies [trip platinum].

In the end, at 10:30 pm, I found all three performances to be tight, friendly, and energized. The between sets took only ten minutes to change. The crowd knew every lyric and was also enthused. The price was great at $35-$47, and the help friendly. In comparison, I photographed Fleetwood Mac at the Mohegan Sun the week before and the tic price was four times MMC’s price. Their show was 2:30 hours with 1:45 of music, lots of chatter and a rare drum solo [it is 2013] from less than average Mic Fleetwood and his red shoes. Lindsey Buckingham is so underrated [and pick-less] as a guitar player. And Stevie is, well, Stevie.

The Massmutal Center is comfortable and does not have a bad seat in their house. Shinedown makes its mark on 5/1 and Pitbull “Feels This Moment” on the 24th as Bob Seger “Turns The Page” at the Mohegan on 5/4.

Tom Banks of the Kiwanis Club is the face of Rockland political forums here in town. For years, he has moderated the discourse of candidates for elected office here in the old Shoetown. Recently, the Chamber of Commerce hosted a forum in which the seven candidates for School Committee were invited but were not given ample time to make their case to the voters. Dave at WRPS put together a second night featuring only the candidates for School Committee. The candidates present included Richard Harris, Rick Dunham, Dan Biggins, Jared Valanzola, and Dick Phelps. Tom Banks stayed true to form with the opening question by interrupting the first candidate, as he was about to make his opening statement, in order to clarify the agenda. Richard Harris was this year’s victim; and after a deep breath and big smile, he was able to regroup and begin his remarks over again. All the candidates did an excellent job; but it was obvious to this observer that Dan Biggins and Jared Valanzola were able to shine above the field. Biggins appeared calm, cool and collected as he turned to the camera, as if by cue on a major news network. Dan is a natural in front of the camera and delivered his remarks in clear, concise and convincing talking points that left him head and shoulders above the field. At times, you would think that he was running for Senator judging by his ability to articulate along with his crisp, clean and polished image. Jared Valanzola has long had his finger on the pulse of the Rockland Public School system and a firm grasp on the issues that affect it. Jared came off as confident, informed and ready to get right to work on the School Committee. For many years, Jared has shown a keen understanding of the issues that far exceeds his years. Jared appears ready to take the reins with little or no break-in period. Rick Dunham did an excellent job as well. Rick was well-spoken and clearly outlined his vision for the School Committee seat. Rich Harris also appeared to be a very likeable and serious candidate with a few bright spots during the event. Long-time former School Committee member, Dick Phelps, outlined his vision of the position which he held for years and years in the past, ending in the mid 1990′s.

Rockland voters are faced with a tough choice this time around for School Committee. In this writer’s honest opinion, the best two candidates for the job are Dan Biggins and Jared Valanzola. They bring youth, energy, and new ideas along with a keen understanding of the issues.

But don’t take my word for it. Watch the video above for yourself and make up your own mind.

Best of luck to all who are running!
