Cardinals Keep Winning Streak Alive

Rockland Beats Brockton 5-4 to reach a 4 game winning streak

The Cardinals were host to the Brockton Dirt Dogs Monday night for a makeup game from the first game of the season. Lyndon Brundidge would be making his second start and was looking to have continued success after his last start. Brockton would strike early as a leadoff walk turned into a run. Rockland got out of the inning with no further damage as Brockton stranded runners on the corners. The Cardinals answered back with two of their own. Glavin led off with a walk and reached second base on a balk. White followed with a walk of his own. Both runners advanced when Glavin stole third and White would advance behind him. Suarez would single both runners in to bring the score to 2-1 Cardinals. Brockton had an answer of their own again as they touched up Brundidge for three more runs. Again one run scored due to a leadoff walk. That was all Brockton would manage for the rest of the game as Brundidge found a groove and the bullpen shut the door. Rockland scored two more in the bottom half of the 2nd as they loaded with the bases with a walk, hit by pitch and then another walk. Glavin would hit an RBI single and White would follow with a sac fly to right. They would add the winning run in the bottom of the third when Suarez led off with a double over the left fielders head and Hoyle would single him over to third. Sean Smolinski would follow it that up with a sac fly to right to score Suarez. Each side would have runners on in the later innings but couldn’t’ push across further runs. Brundidge lasted 3 innings while allowing 4 runs, 6 hits, 3 walks, and 4 strikeouts. Matt Guillemette relieved Brundidge and would pick up the win throwing 2.2 innings and allowing only 1 hit while walking 2 and striking out 3. Jenkins would come in and finish the final 1.1 innings to receive his third save of the year. Suarez would finish the game going 2 for 3 with the 2 RBI. The Cardinals improve to 6-1 on the year and will host the Acushnet Aztecs Tuesday night at the Stadium starting at 730pm.

Cardinals Take Two from Kingston

Rockland Sweeps a Double Header with scores of 5-3 and 5-1

 Game 1

The Cardinals were host to the Kingston Pirates Sunday night for a double header. Tim Cooney would have the ball game and would throw another great game lasting 5 innings for the Cardinals. The Cardinals would strike for two runs in the 2nd inning the 6-7-8 doing the damage. Petruzzelli and Varnadore would score the two runs. The Pirates would be held off the board until the 4th inning when the second hitter in the inning would be hit by pitch and would advance two bases on a wild throw on an attempted pickoff. The next batter would hit a sac-fly to left. The Cardinals had an immediate response to that run by scoring 3 in their half of the inning. Nicholson would lead with a single and steal second base. Mulready would hit a ground ball to the right side to advance Nicholson to third. Petruzzelli would drive in Nicholson on a error. Varnadore and Miller would both single to drive in the other two runs. Ryan Jones (Central Maine CC) would relieve Cooney. Jones had a good first inning but struggled with his command in the top half of 7th. The Pirates got the game closer by a score of 5-3 but with two outs Coach Colitti would go to Jenkins who would get the final batter of the game to fly out to right. Cooney picks up his 2nd win and Jenkins picks up his 2nd save. Nicholson, Varnadore, and Miller each had 2 hits in the game. Petruzzelli would chip in with 2 runs.

 Game 2

The Cardinals turned to Brodie Loughlin to continue to momentum in their favor in game 2. Loughlin struggled in his 5 innings of work but the defense behind him backed him up throughout the game, and the Pirates failed to capitalize on many situations by stranding 11 runners in the first 5 innings with two of those innings the bases were loaded. The Cardinals would strike in the bottom of the 1st as George would double and then steal third. He would eventually score on a wild pitch. The pirates immediately tied it up in the top of the 2nd but that is all they would get as Loughlin lasted 5 innings while striking out 5 and allowing only that one run. Rockland would score two more runs in the 3rd and the 4th. David Tarr relieved Loughlin for the final two innings. The Pirates would threaten with runners in the 6th and 7th but Tarr would be able to stifle their attempts to finish off the game to secure the 5-1 victory. Loughlin picked up his first win of the year. George, White, Mulready, and Guillemette each had 2 hits in game 2 with George also scoring twice. The Cardinals improved to 5-1 on the year and will host Brockton on Monday June 2 at 730pm in Rockland.
