The Rockland Cardinals closed the door on May with a 4-2 record and began the month of June with an 8-0 win at Quincy Thursday night. In a month that has the young Cardinals playing 18 games in 30 days, they certainly showed that they are ready for the grind. Offensively the bats were alive and once again, the Rockland pitching was the backbone.
The Cardinals used 4 pitchers to combine for the shutout led by starter Mike Kelly who went 4 2/3rds and left the game due to shoulder tightness. The Cardinal bullpen responded by pitching to contact and preserving the shutout.
Rockland used a 3 run 2nd inning, followed up by a 3 run 3rd inning as well to jump out to a quick 6-0 lead. Luke Figueira had a pair of doubles and 3 RBI on the night and Brett Dooley went 3-4 while knocking in a pair of his own. The Cardinals would tack on 2 in the 7th as well.
The night was also highlighted by the play of Dylon Grzenda at shortstop. Grzenda showed he has a wide range to go along with great arm strength and a quick release that was especially noticeable on two eye popping plays that helped keep the shutout in tact, as well as a nifty double play turn with Jake Pierce at second. All in all, a solid effort by Rockland.
