The Rockland Cardinals opened their 2017 CBL season at home yesterday earning a split in a doubleheader against Acushnet. Game 1; The Cardinals sent Mike Kelly to the mound and after a quick first inning by Kelly, the Cardinals jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first as Dylan Ashburn knocked in the first 2 runs of the young season with a 2-run single. The Cardinal bats quickly went silent after that, mustering up only 3 more hits the rest of the way in a game that went into extra innings. Kelly, threw 5 solid innings, and had 1 earned run and 5 strikeouts and left the game with a 2-1 lead. Kevin Jones and Ryan Jones finished up for the Cardinals in the 9 inning game 1 loss to Acushnet 3-2.

Game 2; The second game had different look and a different outcome for the Cardinals as they redeemed themselves in a 10-2 rout in 5 innings of Acushnet. Alex McGrath was on the hill for Rockland and the young left-hander did not disappoint, going 5 innings and striking out 5 while really handcuffing and silencing Acushnet’s bats. Meanwhile, the bats would come alive for Rockland led by Jake Pierce and Ty Bell who went a combined 5 for 6, in the leadoff and 3 spot respectively. Pierce’s 2 for 2 night also included 2 walks in which he had a “never say die” approach at the plate which resulted in a walk, and his 4th appearance on the base paths in his 4 at bats for the Cardinals. Bell’s 3 for 4 night included 3 RBI’s also.

Next up for Rockland is another home game vs Whitman under the lights on Tuesday, 7:30 start time.
