Another “Walk off Win” in extra innings (Post 147)

GAME 16 –JULY 1, 2011

Pembroke Post 143 came to Rockland Veterans Memorial Stadium for a rematch of game 2 in the 2011 season. Rockland Post 147 put the rookie ace Matt Nicholson on the mound to face Lucas Nagle from Pembroke, who beat Rockland 3 – 1 in game 2. Post 147 struck first in the second inning, when Sean Roche drew a walk and Kevin Quinlan singled and Jake Petruzzelli walked, followed by a Steve Gardner fielders choice. Rockland was up two to nothing, but was short lived when Pembroke caught up to Nicholson in the third inning on a similar scenario of walks, a single and a sacrifice. The evenly matched teams went into the fifth inning and both scored two runs in their half of the inning, with only one difference, Rockland had to change pitchers. Nicholson working through a hand injury had become ineffective so Scott Stohlberg was asked to assume the pitching duties. Pembroke executed a small ball plan to perfection for its two runs, with the help of two Rockland errors. Stohlberg gave way to Rockland’s reliable closer Joe Lennon, who carried his team into the top of the ninth inning. Pembroke caught a break when their second baseman Holland smashed a hanging pitch from Lennon over the right field fence to give them the lead. The beauty of this years Rockland team is the don’t care if they are down a run or two, just give them one more at bat and see what happens. Case in point, Matt Nicholson, still in the game at center field, came up to the plate to start the bottom of the ninth. Pembroke had to change pitchers after Nagle went 8 innings. Nicholson hit the first pitch he saw from McCarthy, the new Pembroke pitcher,  Brody Loughlin, next up for Rockland, also singled and both players advance on bases with a wild pitch. Kevin Crane drew a base on balls, loading the bases for Post 147. John Mulready now up hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Nicholson and tie the game at five. Rookie sensation Sean Roche came to the plate next and drove a line drive to the gap in left center to send Brody Loughlin home with the walk off winning run. Rockland for the second game in a row has walked off winners.

On The Positive; Joe Lennon was the winning pitcher again and had a hit. Matt Nicholson had 3 hits, and Brody Loughlin, Chris Dononvan, and Kevin Quinlan all had 2 hits, but the best hit of the night belonged to Sean Roche. Post 147 still had 3 players unavailable.
