Cardinals Top Marshfield to Advance to CBL Semi-finals

July 21, 2015  The Cardinals played host to Marshfield Tuesday night for the first round of the CBL playoffs. Rockland looked to Ethan Forrest to finally end this streak and help Rockland advance in the playoffs. Marshfield touched up Forrest for 2 early runs. Rockland responded with 1 of their own. Michael drove in Guillemette who got on by a walk. Forrest settled down as he shut down the opposing offense for the next 3 innings. In the second, Rockland pushed across three more runs to go ahead 4-2. Petruzzelli walked and Powers followed with a single to center. Guillemette singled to load the bases and Petruzzelli scored on wild pitch. Greene then mashed a triple to deep right center bringing in Guillemette and Powers. Marshfield got 2 in the 5th to tie the game at 4-4. Rockland immediately responded with 3 runs for a 7-4 lead. Guillemette led off with a single and Greene walked. Mulready laid down a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt. Michael followed with a walk to load the bases. Cook doubled in Guillemette and Greene. Michael would score on a wild pitch for the third run of the inning. The Cardinals added 2 more insurance runs in the bottom of the 6th as George walked and then stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. Guillemette singled in George. Guillemette stole second and third and scored on a double by Mulready. Those insurance runs were much needed as the things began to be shaky and looked like things might turn for the worse as they have done during the 5-game losing streak. Rockland gave up three runs and had the bases loaded. Woodhead came in for relief and was able to strikeout a batter with the bases loaded to secure the 9-7 win for Rockland. The losing streak was finally over. It was good seeing parts of the old Cardinals come to life last night as the offense seemed to have awaken. Forrest picked up the win pitching 6.2 innings. Guillemette led the offense going 3 for 3 with a walk and scoring 4 runs. Greene and Cook each had two RBI apiece. Rockland received good news during their game as Bourne upset Canton, so instead of going to Braintree Rockland will travel to Acushnet Thursday night for the semi-finals starting at 730pm at Pope Park.
