Rockland County District Attorney Thomas E. Walsh II announced today that Todd Humphrey, 46, of Stony Point, New York has been indicted by a Rockland County Grand Jury on Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, Assault in the First Degree, and two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third stemming from a violent attack at a hotel in West Nyack, New York.
On October 17, 2022 at approximately 5 am, officers from the Clarkstown Police Department responded to the Tappan Zee Hotel, located at 110 North Route 303 in West Nyack, NY, for reports of a woman screaming. Officers located a female victim who had substantial lacerations to her head. The victim informed officers that while she was using the shower her boyfriend began striking her in the head with what appeared to be a hammer. She was able to escape the room and was assisted by hotel staff who called 9-1-1.
The suspect left the hotel before officers arrived on scene. A regional alert was issued notifying officers of the subject and his vehicle. Humphrey was located in Putnam County, NY and lead New York State Police in a vehicle pursuit that ended in Orange County, NY when he crashed his vehicle and was taken into custody.
District Attorney Thomas E. Walsh II said, “As alleged, the actions of the defendant on that day were brutal and showed no regard for the life of the victim. I would like to commend the swift response by the Clarkstown Police Department with assistance from the New York State Police for apprehending the suspect. The defendant will now be held
accountable for his alleged criminal actions.”
Humphrey was arraigned before Judge Schwartz on October 25, 2022. The defendant was remanded to Rockland County Jail and his next court appearance is November 15, 2022.
The investigation was handled by the Clarkstown Police Department. Executive Assistant District Attorney Nabeela McLeod is prosecuting the case.
It should be noted that a criminal complaint is merely an accusation and that a defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
