Haverstraw, NY – A tribute to a local hero was made official this week as New York State Senator Bill Weber announced the successful passage of legislation to rename a portion of Route 202 in the Town of Haverstraw as the Hector L. Soto Memorial Highway.
The newly designated stretch of highway, running from Rosman Road to Route 45, will serve as a permanent memorial to Hector L. Soto, a man whose life was dedicated to service in his community and country.
Soto’s legacy spans decades of selfless service as a Vietnam War veteran, a long-standing member of the Haverstraw Police Department, and as a dedicated Town Councilman. Throughout his life, Soto remained deeply committed to his community, his heritage, and the values that he held dear. His impact on the Town of Haverstraw is immeasurable, and the new highway designation will ensure that future generations will remember and honor his contributions.
Town of Haverstraw Supervisor Howard Phillips and the Haverstraw Town Board also expressed their gratitude for the renaming, acknowledging the significant role Hector Soto played in shaping the community.
Assemblyman Pat Carroll’s support in pushing the companion bill through the Assembly was instrumental in securing this recognition for Hector Soto, whose contributions to public safety, military service, and local governance continue to resonate in the town today.
