Peas Playcare Saturday Spotlight with owner Alyssa Previti
Tell me a bit about your background. What did you do before starting your business?
I was the Head of HR for a tech company called Wellfound for 10 years. This taught me to be a wiz at operations, but in my childhood and through college I always wanted to work with young children. In between those times I was everything: a retail manager, a dog walker, a waitress, and too many more to name. This taught me how to juggle (metaphorically), have a sense of urgency, and most importantly – a ton of empathy.
Why did you start your business?
I became a parent to twins four years ago, and I realized how true the “it takes a village” saying is, except in these times it’s harder than ever to find that village. I wanted to make that better for everyone.
What does your business offer?
We are a children’s play space, but my way of describing it is “a place where your kids will want to play, and you’ll want to hang out.” We have an indoor playground area, soft play, and imaginative toys – all geared to keep ages 0–6 busy. We also have a self-serve coffee lounge and seating for the grown-ups. In addition to this, we have an infant room, a relaxation movie theater, enrichment classes, and premium birthday parties. We offer more things than I can say in one breath.
What makes your business special/different?
When I first had the idea for a play space that is also comfortable for adults, I couldn’t find many comparables in the U.S. market. I found that the idea is popular in European and Asian countries, particularly in Scandinavia and Japan, but not here. I think it’s in the zeitgeist now and some similar businesses have opened in Brooklyn, but it’s definitely a new idea for Nyack and the surrounding areas.
Who is your target customer?
Families with children ages 0-6.
What made you choose Nyack as the location for your business?
As I searched for a location, I told family and friends “it’s Nyack or bust.” I live in South Nyack and I’m completely charmed by Nyack every single day while I walk through the village.
Where do you see your business in the future?
Hopefully thriving and supporting each new generation as they come in to play!
