SUFFERN, NY— A 16-year-old student was arrested Friday after a fight inside Suffern High School left a staff member injured, according to police.
The Ramapo Police Department said officers responded to the school after receiving reports of a fight in progress involving two students.
Authorities said that when school staff attempted to intervene and break up the altercation, one of the students allegedly assaulted a staff member.
Faculty members, school administrators and the department’s school resource officer responded quickly to the scene and brought the situation under control. Police said the school resource officer took the student into custody without further incident.
The student was transported to Ramapo police headquarters and is being processed on felony-level charges, officials said. Because the suspect is a minor, police did not release the student’s name.
The injured staff member was taken by Faist Ambulance Corps to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment. The extent of the injuries was not immediately released.
Police said the investigation remains active and that additional charges or arrests may follow.
In a statement, the Ramapo Police Department commended faculty, staff and school security personnel for their swift response and cooperation in helping to contain the situation. Officials added that maintaining the safety of students, educators and the broader school community remains a priority.
