Monsey, N.Y. โ A 7-year-old girl was killed after being struck by a school bus in the Town of Ramapo on Wednesday morning, prompting an ongoing investigation by local authorities into the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
According to the Ramapo Police Department, officers responded shortly after 9 a.m. on July 8 to the area of Blauvelt Road near Manor Drive in Monsey following reports of a pedestrian struck by a school bus. Emergency responders arrived within minutes, but the child, a Monsey resident, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the bus involved was a full-size yellow school bus operated for Yeshiva Viznitz. It was being driven by a 28-year-old Monsey resident at the time of the incident. Authorities said the driver remained at the scene, cooperated fully with investigators, and underwent screening for alcohol and drug impairment. Investigators reported there were no signs of impairment.
Preliminary findings from the investigation indicate that speed does not appear to have been a contributing factor in the crash. Police also said there is currently no evidence of criminal conduct, and no criminal charges have been filed against the driver. The investigation remains active and is being conducted by the Ramapo Police Department’s Crash Investigation Unit.
Authorities have released few additional details about the moments leading up to the collision. Multiple media outlets, citing law enforcement officials, reported that the child was crossing Blauvelt Road when she was struck, though investigators have not yet released a detailed reconstruction of the incident or determined the exact sequence of events.
The crash occurred during the busy morning hours in Monsey, a densely populated hamlet in the Town of Ramapo that is home to many families and experiences significant pedestrian and school transportation activity, particularly during the school year and summer educational programs. The incident drew a large emergency response and temporarily disrupted traffic in the area while investigators documented the scene and collected evidence.
Fatal crashes involving school buses are relatively uncommon, but transportation safety experts note that pedestrians are among the most vulnerable road users around school buses, particularly near loading zones, intersections, and residential neighborhoods. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and other safety organizations routinely emphasize the importance of caution for both motorists and pedestrians in school transportation areas.
As news of the tragedy spread throughout Rockland County, members of the Monsey community expressed shock and sorrow over the loss of the young girl. Community members gathered near the scene throughout the day, while local residents and officials extended condolences to the child’s family.
The Ramapo Police Department is asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has information that could assist investigators to contact the department as the investigation continues. Officials have not announced when additional findings may be released.
