Haverstraw, NY – A man was found dead on railroad tracks near Leonard Street in Haverstraw on Thursday morning, October 29, prompting a police investigation and a temporary halt to CSX train operations in the area.

According to reports, the Haverstraw Police Department received a call at approximately 8:50 a.m. concerning a man on the railroad tracks. Responding authorities located the individual and determined that he was deceased.

Haverstraw Police Chief John Gould Jr. confirmed the discovery near Leonard Street. The circumstances surrounding the man’s death have not been determined, and investigators are working to establish what occurred before authorities were notified.

The Rockland County Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Criminal Investigation was called to the scene to assist local police. The bureau provides investigative support in cases requiring additional law enforcement resources.

CSX train operations in the immediate area were halted while authorities conducted their investigation. The interruption allowed investigators to examine the railroad property and surrounding area.

As of Thursday afternoon, no confirmed information was available regarding when normal train operations would resume or how many trains were affected by the disruption.

Authorities have not publicly identified the deceased man. His age, hometown and other identifying information have not been released.

Investigators have also not announced an official cause or manner of death. It remains unknown whether the individual was struck by a train or died under other circumstances.

No information has been released indicating whether investigators suspect criminal activity. Police have not announced any arrests or identified additional individuals connected with the incident.

The investigation involves the Haverstraw Police Department, with assistance requested from the Rockland County Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Criminal Investigation. No official findings regarding the cause of death have been made public.

The discovery occurred along railroad tracks used by CSX, a freight railroad operator with rail operations through the Hudson Valley and Rockland County.

The incident also resulted in a disruption to railroad activity while law enforcement personnel worked at the scene. No information was immediately available regarding additional public safety restrictions or whether nearby road crossings were affected.

As of October 29, the investigation remains ongoing, with several significant questions unanswered, including the man’s identity, how he came to be on the railroad tracks and the circumstances leading to his death.

Further information is expected to depend on the findings of the investigating authorities. Rockland News will provide updates as additional verified details become available.
