Ramapo, NY – The Office of Special Investigations (OSI) is currently overseeing a detailed probe into the circumstances surrounding the death of Rakim Tillery, who passed away on January 3, 2024, after an engagement with New York State Police. This incident has sparked significant attention, leading to the release of body-worn camera footage by law enforcement officials, aiming to provide transparency and insights into the fatal encounter.
The confrontation led to one trooper sustaining minor injuries, while a second trooper emerged from the incident unharmed. Authorities have assured the public that there is no ongoing threat related to this incident.
On the afternoon of the incident, at approximately 2:55 PM, New York State Troopers initiated a traffic stop on I-87 in the Town of Ramapo. The vehicle involved was previously identified in connection with a homicide investigation. Reports indicate that the situation rapidly escalated when the suspect, later identified as Rakim Tillery and the sole occupant of the vehicle, engaged in gunfire with the troopers. In response, the officers discharged their division-issued firearms, resulting in Tillery’s death.

Traffic Impact: The incident caused significant traffic disruptions, particularly on I-87 southbound at mile marker 31.5 in Hillburn (Town of Ramapo), near exit 15A. Three right lanes were closed for several hours to facilitate the active police investigation, causing traffic to back up through the Sloatsburg area. Additionally, traffic congestion was reported on I-287 northbound / Route 17N in Mahwah, NJ, as motorists sought alternative routes.
