Stony Point, NY – Penguin Rep Theatre is proud to present the world premiere of The Steel Man, a new play by Cary Gitter, directed by the theatre’s founding Artistic Director, Joe Brancato. Performances begin on Friday, September 6, and continue through September 29 at Penguin’s historic venue in Stony Point, New York.
Set in 1980s Pittsburgh, The Steel Man follows Jake Gellert, an aspiring actor grappling with the shadow of his father, Leo, a Hungarian Jewish immigrant. This powerful drama, inspired by a true story, delves into themes of family legacy, trauma, and hope for the future. The play marks the culmination of Penguin Rep’s 46th season.
Cary Gitter, Penguin Rep’s playwright-in-residence, has seen previous successes with his works Gene & Gilda and The Virtuous Life of Joseph Andrews at the theatre. His musical The Sabbath Girl opened Penguin’s 2024 season before making its way to an Off-Broadway run.
The cast features Sam Guncler as Leo Gellert, Amanda Kristin Nichols as Christine Sommers, and Leighton Samuels as Jake Gellert. The Steel Man is designed by Christopher and Justin Swader (set), Christian Fleming (costumes), Ed McCarthy (lights), and Max Silverman (music and sound).
