An 82 year-old Haverstraw man was killed yesterday, allegedly by a hit-and-run driver as the man was crossing Route 9W near Fairmount Avenue. The incident took place around 7 Tuesday morning near New Main Street. Juan Alberto Germonsen reportedly lived at the Green Hills Home for Adults nearby. He was found lying in the roadway, rushed to the hospital, and later pronounced dead. Police continue their search for the driver. The suspect’s vehicle is a silver or white Ford Explorer with dark rims, a moonroof, and should have damage to passenger side window and front bumper. Spring Valley’s Building Inspector Pleads Not Guilty to Fatal March Fire Charges
Spring Valley’s building inspector pleaded not guilty yesterday to charges stemming from the fatal March fire that killed a village volunteer firefighter and a resident of an adult home. Rockland D.A. Tom Walsh says 64 year-old Wayne Ballard has been charged with Falsifying Business Records and two other charges. The investigation into the Evergreen Home for Adults continues. Spring Valley’s Assistant Building Inspector, Ray Canario, entered a “not guilty” plea earlier this month on charges he falsified documents he filed with the state. They are both due back in court December 8th.

Haverstraw Gets $10 Million in Grants to Revitalize Downtown, Improve Ferry Service
The Village of Haverstraw was revealed yesterday as the winner of a $10 million economic development grant from the state’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative. The DRI program recognizes the importance of local communities and provides financial and support services to them. Haverstraw Mayor Mike Kohut says the money could be used for a cultural arts center and streetscaping to make the downtown area more attractive…
Ossining in Westchester also got $10 million, so the money both municipalities got will provide more ferry service between the two locations, including on the weekends, to help encourage tourism. Governor Kathy Hochul made the announcement yesterday in Ossining, and said while both villages already provide an outstanding quality of life, their downtowns need a little extra boost…
And that was Rockland Business Association CEO Al Samuels. Hochul said she looks forward to returning for many groundbreakings and ribbon-cutting ceremonies she anticipates in both communities.
