Rockland’s COVID Death Toll Hits 1,000

COVID has taken two more Rockland lives. The total now stands at 1,000 since the pandemic began. Other statistics are creeping up again, with 12 hospitalized with coronavirus and 682 active cases.

Rockland Fire Instructor Appointed to State Task Force on Improving Fire Services in NY

A Rockland fire instructor has been appointed to a state task force charged with studying the volunteer firefighting service in New York. Jerry Knapp is a training officer at the Rockland County Fire Training Center in Pomona, and hopes the task force will improve how new volunteers get recruited, and how fires are fought…

The task force is expected to provide a report to the governor this spring.

Two Spring Valley Building Department Employees Indicted on Felony Charges Stemming from Fatal Fire Last March

Two village of Spring Valley building department employees have been indicted on felony charges stemming from the fatal fire last March at the Evergreen Adult Home in Spring Valley that killed a resident and a volunteer firefighter. Rockland County D.A. Tom Walsh says a county grand jury indicted 45 year-old Raymond Canario and 64 year-old Wayne Ballard, on several charges, including Falsifying Business Records and Offering a False Instrument for Filing. 35 year-old firefighter Jared Lloyd, and 79 year-old Evergreen resident, Oliver Hueston, were both killed in the blaze. Arraignment dates have not yet been set.

Woman Killed in PIP Accident ID’d

A Staten Island woman was killed Sunday after being struck while crossing the Palisades Parkway in Stony Point. State Police say 66 year-old Galina Surman was hiking with family and friends around 11:45 Sunday morning. The driver of a 2010 Acura-TL was traveling in the left-hand northbound lane on the parkway when she was hit. Attempts to revive her at the scene were unsuccessful. Police say the driver was not impaired no charges are expected.
