WEST NYACK, NY – On March 6, 2024, Rockland County voters will have an opportunity to shape the future of local education by casting their votes on the “Building For Excellence” capital project referendum. This ambitious proposal aims to construct a new 52,000 square foot, two-story building in West Nyack, designed to enhance the Career and Technical Education (CTE) and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) programs offered by Rockland BOCES.

The planned facility is not just an expansion but a significant investment in the educational infrastructure of the county, with – according to District Superintendent Chris D’Ambrese – a focus on supporting both current needs and future growth. The new building will provide much-needed classroom space for the Jesse J. Kaplan School, known for its specialized programs for students with exceptional needs, alongside the bolstering of CTE and STEM education pathways.

The referendum represents a critical step towards addressing the highest-need, student-facing capital projects within the county. Through the development of this new facility, Rockland BOCES aims to enhance program offerings, expand existing facilities, and fundamentally support the educational journey of its students.

Supporters of the project highlight its potential to provide state-of-the-art learning environments that can adapt to evolving educational demands. Moreover, the expansion is seen as a direct investment in the workforce of tomorrow, equipping students with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

Critics or those cautious about the project may raise questions regarding the financial implications of the borrowing proposed to fund the construction. As with any significant public expenditure, the impact on local taxes and the long-term financial health of the community are considerations that voters will weigh.

As the March 6 vote approaches, Rockland County stands at a crossroads, with the decision to significantly invest in its educational facilities reflecting broader values and priorities concerning the future of its youth and the community’s development.
