New City, NY – **The Town of Clarkstown has broken ground on a new playground and splash pad in Central Nyack, a project that town officials say will create the hamlet’s first municipal playground and expand recreational opportunities for local residents.
Clarkstown Supervisor George Hoehmann and members of the Town Board attended the groundbreaking ceremony on Oct. 6 for the Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski Playground and Splash Pad. The new facility will be built directly across from the Central Nyack Community Center, creating a centralized area for indoor and outdoor community activities.
Plans call for both traditional playground equipment and a splash pad. The town acquired two residential properties to provide the land needed for the project. Demolition is expected to take place by the end of 2026, followed by site preparation and construction. Town officials are aiming to have the new recreational space open by summer 2027.
The playground and splash pad are being named in honor of former New York State Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski, who secured $1 million in state funding for the project. Zebrowski represented the area in the State Assembly before leaving office and was involved in obtaining funding for the Central Nyack development.
The project is the latest in a series of infrastructure and recreational improvements made in Central Nyack in recent years.
In 2023, the Central Nyack Community Center underwent renovations that included a new roof, improvements to the gymnasium and installation of a water filtration system. The community center serves as an indoor gathering and recreational space for residents of the hamlet.
Earlier this year, a community garden was also established in Central Nyack. The garden was created as a shared space where residents can grow fresh produce while providing another setting for neighbors to meet and participate in community activities.
Town officials said the addition of the playground and splash pad is intended to complement those previous projects by providing additional outdoor recreation near the community center.
Hoehmann, speaking on behalf of the Town Board, said the projects are part of the town’s continuing investment in Central Nyack.
“The Town Council and I made a commitment to invest in Central Nyack and we have delivered,” Hoehmann said. “With the renovations to the Community Center, the creation of a community garden, and the Playground and Splash Pad, Central Nyack now has a full array of community spaces for residents to gather, both indoors and out.”
Hoehmann added that he was proud of the work completed in the community and said he was looking forward to the playground opening next summer.
Once completed, the playground and splash pad will sit across from the community center, placing several of Central Nyack’s recreational and community resources within the same area. The project will also mark the opening of the hamlet’s first town-operated playground.
Construction will proceed following demolition and site work, with the town currently targeting summer 2027 for completion.
