NEW CITY, N.Y. โ As high temperatures and humidity continue to affect the Hudson Valley, Rockland County officials are reminding residents that dozens of cooling centers are available throughout the county for anyone seeking relief from the heat.
County officials have compiled a list of 26 air-conditioned facilities that residents can use during periods of extreme heat. The cooling centers are located throughout Rockland’s towns and villages and include community centers, municipal buildings, senior centers and other public facilities. Officials advise residents to call ahead before visiting to confirm hours of operation and availability.
The county’s cooling center network includes locations in New City, Nyack, Haverstraw, Suffern, Orangeburg, Nanuet, Stony Point, Hillburn and other communities. Among the participating facilities are the Central Nyack Community Center, Orangetown Town Hall, Ramapo Town Hall, Village Hall of Suffern and the Palisades Center in West Nyack.
Public health officials across New York have emphasized the dangers associated with prolonged exposure to extreme heat. According to the New York State Department of Health, high temperatures can lead to heat exhaustion, heat stroke and other serious medical conditions, particularly among vulnerable populations. Those considered most at risk include older adults, infants and young children, individuals with chronic medical conditions, people with disabilities, outdoor workers and residents who do not have access to air conditioning.
Health experts recommend staying in air-conditioned environments whenever possible, drinking plenty of water, limiting strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day and checking on neighbors, family members and friends who may need assistance. Officials also urge residents never to leave children or pets unattended in vehicles, where temperatures can rise rapidly even when outdoor temperatures appear moderate.
Extreme heat is considered one of the deadliest weather-related hazards in the United States. State officials have increasingly focused on preparedness measures as heat waves have become more frequent and intense in recent years. New York State has expanded programs designed to help communities establish cooling centers and improve access to cooling resources, while also promoting programs that assist eligible residents with obtaining air conditioning units for their homes.
Rockland County officials encourage residents to familiarize themselves with nearby cooling locations before temperatures reach dangerous levels. Individuals who begin experiencing symptoms such as dizziness, confusion, nausea, excessive sweating or difficulty breathing are encouraged to seek a cooler environment immediately and obtain medical attention if symptoms worsen.
The county’s cooling centers will remain available as needed during periods of extreme heat throughout the summer. A complete and updated list of facilities can be found on the Rockland County government’s website. Residents are encouraged to monitor weather forecasts and stay informed about any heat advisories or warnings issued by the National Weather Service.
