A man and a juvenile were arrested after a police pursuit ended in a fiery crash in Tomkins Cove, following an alleged attempt to steal mail from a residence. The incident occurred in Rockland County at approximately 12:10 p.m. on Tuesday, October 8, 2024.
According to Stony Point Police Lieutenant Daniel Schoales, officers responded to a suspicious vehicle call after reports of individuals removing mail from a mailbox in front of a home. The officers located the vehicle matching the description on Mott Farm Road. When police attempted to stop the car, the driver accelerated, fleeing eastbound at a high speed.
The vehicle eventually went out of sight, but officers found it moments later engulfed in flames after crashing down an embankment. A 15-year-old juvenile from Manhattan exited the car and surrendered to the police without incident. Thankfully, no injuries were reported in the crash.
Stony Point Fire Department arrived at the scene to extinguish the blaze, while numerous agencies, including the Haverstraw Police with a drone, the Rockland County Sheriff’s Office aviation unit, and K-9 units from Ramapo Police, assisted in searching for additional suspects.
Following an extensive search, Sekou Touray, age 18, of the Bronx, was apprehended along with two other men. However, after being interviewed by detectives, the two other men were released without charges.
Touray now faces multiple charges, including grand larceny, petit larceny, and endangering the welfare of a child. He was released with an appearance ticket. The juvenile, whose name has been withheld due to his age, was processed and released to a family member.
This investigation remains ongoing, with police still searching for at least one more suspect. Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact the Stony Point Detective Bureau at 845-786-2422.
