New City, NY โ County Executive Ed Day and Consumer Protection Director Kimberly Von Ronn are highlighting a new law in honor of National Consumer Protection Week, urging residents to stay informed about recent changes affecting credit card transactions.
Effective February 11, 2024, New York State implemented a law mandating merchants statewide to provide clear disclosure of credit card surcharges to consumers. The law stipulates that credit card surcharges must not exceed the amount charged to the business by the credit card company. Additionally, businesses are required to display the total price of an item or service, inclusive of any credit card surcharge, before checkout. Alternatively, businesses may opt for a two-tiered pricing system, where the credit card price is presented alongside the cash price. Violators of these provisions face civil penalties.
Residents seeking further clarification on these regulations are encouraged to contact Rockland County Consumer Protection at (845)364-3901 or via email at CPLCAL@co.rockland.ny.us.
For those wishing to file a complaint with the New York State Division of Consumer Protection, complaints can be submitted online at http://www.dos.ny.gov/consumerprotection.
