New City, NY – In recognition of National Mental Health Awareness Month, the Town of Clarkstown and local mental health organizations came together to dedicate a new Little Free Library at Town Hall in memory of Lauren McKenna, a local resident who lost her life to an overdose. This new library serves as a powerful resource for the community, promoting literacy and mental health awareness while honoring McKenna’s legacy.
The event, which took place at Town Hall, focused on the intersection of mental health and substance use, underscoring the importance of addressing these critical issues within the community. The library is stocked with a variety of books, including children’s books, community favorites, and valuable informational resources on mental health, particularly substance abuse.
Councilman Axelrod, along with Lauren’s parents, Steve and Corrinna McKenna, played a role in bringing this initiative to life.
The Little Free Library was created with the help of BOCES students, who built the bookcase, and it has already become a cherished addition to the community. Mental health organizations have also contributed materials to be included in the library, ensuring that visitors have access to valuable resources about mental health, substance abuse prevention, and recovery.
The Little Free Library is open to all who wish to visit, and the public is encouraged to stop by Town Hall to check out the collection. This initiative not only helps raise awareness for mental health issues but also strengthens the community’s connection and commitment to supporting one another during difficult times.
