Monsey, NY – Two people were seriously injured early Sunday morning following a collision involving a motorcycle and a taxi on College Road in Monsey, according to reports from the scene.
The crash occurred shortly after 12:30 a.m. near the intersection of College Road and Dolson Road in the Town of Ramapo. Emergency personnel were called to the area following reports of a serious collision involving the two vehicles.
The two people who had been riding on the motorcycle suffered serious injuries in the crash. Hatzoloh paramedics provided emergency medical care at the scene before transporting both patients to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla for further evaluation and treatment. Westchester Medical Center serves as a regional trauma center and routinely receives patients with serious injuries from throughout Rockland County and the lower Hudson Valley.
The driver of the taxi was also evaluated following the collision and was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern. The extent of the taxi driver’s injuries was not immediately available.
Ramapo Police responded to the crash along with Hatzoloh and other area emergency-service organizations. College Road was temporarily closed to traffic while first responders treated the injured, cleared the roadway and police conducted their initial investigation.
Authorities had not released the names or ages of the people involved in the crash. Additional information regarding their medical conditions was also not immediately available.
Police had not announced what caused the collision or whether factors such as speed, visibility, road conditions or driver error may have contributed. No information was immediately available regarding whether any traffic citations or charges had been issued.
The crash occurred during the overnight hours on College Road, a heavily traveled roadway running through Monsey and neighboring areas of the Town of Ramapo. The road provides access to residential neighborhoods, businesses and several major routes in the area. The temporary closure affected overnight traffic while police and emergency crews remained at the scene.
Motorcycle crashes can result in particularly serious injuries because riders have substantially less physical protection than occupants of passenger vehicles. Helmets and other protective equipment can reduce the risk of certain injuries, but motorcyclists remain vulnerable during collisions with larger vehicles. New York law requires motorcycle operators and passengers to wear approved helmets.
