NYACK, NY — The Cancer Center at Montefiore Nyack Hospital is stepping up its community health efforts by offering free colorectal cancer screenings for men and women aged 45 and older. The screenings will take place on Friday, July 25th, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., providing eligible individuals with a non-invasive at-home test to help detect early signs of colorectal cancer.
This vital public health initiative is made possible through funding from the Cancer Services Program (CSP) of the Hudson Valley in collaboration with Montefiore Nyack Hospital. The testing kits, known as the fecal occult blood test (FOBT) or fecal immunochemical test (FIT), allow individuals to collect a small stool sample at home, which is then submitted to a lab or healthcare provider as directed.
Colorectal cancer often develops silently, with hidden (occult) blood in the stool being one of the earliest signs. These screenings are designed to catch potential issues early—before symptoms develop—improving outcomes for those affected. A negative test typically means no further testing is needed until the next recommended screening cycle. However, a positive result will necessitate a follow-up colonoscopy to determine the cause of the bleeding.
Importantly, diagnostic follow-up services are also available at no cost to eligible individuals if abnormalities are found. The CSP will assign a case manager to assist patients through the next steps of their diagnostic journey.
