Nanuet Public Library Closes for Emergency Repairs After Monday’s Severe Storms

July 16, 2025  •  By helpdesk1

NANUET, NY — The Nanuet Public Library is closed until further notice following significant water damage caused by Monday evening’s torrential rainstorm that swept through Rockland County.

According to library officials, the building sustained flooding in multiple areas during the severe weather event on July 14, which brought flash floods, submerged vehicles, and overwhelmed infrastructure across Nanuet and surrounding towns. The damage has prompted immediate emergency repairs to ensure the safety of the facility and its patrons.

“We are working diligently on repairs and plan to reopen as soon as we can safely do so,” the library stated in a public notice issued Tuesday. “Any overdue fines accrued during this closure will be waived. Patrons will have an opportunity to pick up materials from the hold shelf once we reopen.” A photo of the teen room, amidst the cleanup efforts, was shared with Rockland News.

This week’s storm, which brought rainfall rates of up to three inches per hour, triggered a Flash Flood Warning from the National Weather Service. Nanuet was among the hardest-hit communities, with floodwaters impacting roads, businesses, and public services. The library, a central community resource that recently received a grant for renovations, has faced weather-related issues in the past, including previous flooding and power outages.

County Executive Day, in his weekly spot on AM Rockland, reported that 32 vehicles were reported at least partially submerged on Monday, and required emergency services assistance.

Library officials expressed gratitude to the public for their patience and assured residents that steps are being taken to mitigate similar problems in the future. Updates regarding reopening will be shared early next week.

In the meantime, residents are encouraged to stay informed through local news outlets and the library’s official communication channels.
