New City, NY – Rockland County Executive Ed Day and Human Rights Commissioner Spencer Chiimbwe have announced that nominations are now being accepted for the esteemed Lottie Swan-Crawford Human Rights Award. Presented by the Rockland County Human Rights Commission, this award honors individuals who have made significant strides in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within the county.
The award is named in honor of Lottie Swan-Crawford, a trailblazer in the fight for human rights and social justice in Rockland County. As the first African American woman to serve as Commissioner of the Rockland County Human Rights Commission, Swan-Crawford championed critical initiatives, including affordable housing programs and the county’s first fair housing law. Her dedication to advancing civil rights and her tireless advocacy for marginalized communities left an indelible mark on the region.
“This award is a tribute to those who, like Lottie Swan-Crawford, work to dismantle barriers and create a more just and inclusive community,” said Human Rights Commissioner Spencer Chiimbwe. “We encourage community members to recognize the individuals making a tangible difference in the lives of others.”
The award seeks to spotlight individuals whose actions reflect a deep commitment to fairness, inclusivity, and human rights. Nominees should have demonstrated leadership in fostering equity and justice and have made meaningful contributions that positively impact Rockland County.
Community members are invited to submit nominations that highlight the nominee’s specific contributions and their impact on the community. The deadline for submissions is February 28, 2025.
Nomination forms can be accessed online through the Rockland County Human Rights Commission’s website.
