(STONY POINT, NEW YORK) – March 28, 2024 – Penguin Rep Theatre, Stony Point’s gem of performing arts, today announced an enthralling lineup for its 2024 season. Under the visionary leadership of Joe Brancato, the founding Artistic Director, and Andrew M. Horn, Executive Director, the theater is set to celebrate its 46th year with a season that promises to captivate audiences with laughter, love, and groundbreaking performances.
This year’s program is particularly special as it features two world premieres alongside other remarkable productions. Opening the season on May 3 is The Sabbath Girl: A New Musical, a vibrant piece that explores the complexities of modern life and the unexpected avenues of love. With a book by Cary Gitter, lyrics by Neil Berg and Cary Gitter, and music by Neil Berg, this premiere is directed by none other than Joe Brancato himself. Set against the backdrop of a bustling city, The Sabbath Girl tells the story of Angie Mastrantoni, a young woman navigating the challenges of running her art gallery and settling into a new apartment, all while her romantic life takes an unforeseen turn.
Neil Berg, a renowned composer and Nyack resident known for his work on award-winning musicals such as The 12 and Grumpy Old Men: The Musical, brings his musical genius to the production, ensuring that The Sabbath Girl will be a must-see for theater enthusiasts. The musical will grace the stage through May 26, offering audiences a fresh narrative filled with humor and heart.
Following this, from June 14 through July 7, Penguin Rep Theatre will present Centennial Casting, a comedy by Gino DiIorio and Nancy Bleemer. Directed by Brancato, this play promises a delightful mix of laughter and unexpected romance, showcasing the magic that ensues when love is found in the least anticipated places.
The season continues with Dear Jack, Dear Louise from July 26 through August 18. Penned by Ken Ludwig, a playwright celebrated for hits like Lend Me a Tenor and Crazy for You, this production offers a poignant look into his parents’ courtship during World War II, delivering a narrative that is both deeply personal and universally touching.
Rounding out the season from September 6 through September 29 is the world premiere of The Steel Man, a compelling drama by Cary Gitter that delves into the complex relationship between a father and son as they confront their past and look towards a hopeful future.
Hosted in a repurposed hay barn at 7 Crickettown Road, Penguin Rep Theatre offers an intimate setting that brings audiences closer to the action.
