West Nyack, NY – A man died Tuesday morning after falling from an upper level inside the Palisades Center in West Nyack, according to information released by the Clarkstown Police Department.
Police said the incident occurred at approximately 7:22 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 22, at the shopping center at 1000 Palisades Center Drive. Officers were dispatched to the mall approximately three minutes later, according to the police account reported Tuesday.
Investigators determined that an adult man had jumped from an upper interior level of the shopping center. Emergency personnel transported him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police had not publicly identified the man as of Tuesday afternoon because authorities were working to notify his family.
No additional information about the man’s age, hometown or circumstances leading up to the incident had been publicly released as of Tuesday afternoon. Authorities also had not announced that any other individuals were involved.
The incident happened before the mall’s regular Tuesday opening time. Palisades Center currently lists its regular hours as 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. The shopping center’s official website continued to list normal operating hours Tuesday.
The four-level Palisades Center is one of Rockland County’s largest commercial and entertainment properties. New York State tourism information lists the mall as having more than 200 stores along with restaurants and entertainment attractions.
Clarkstown Police expressed condolences to the man’s family and loved ones and directed members of the public who may be experiencing emotional distress to local and national crisis-support services. The department referred residents to the Suicide Prevention Coalition of Rockland County and noted that the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available by calling or texting 988. The Rockland County Behavioral Health Helpline is also available at 845-222-9999.
Information about the incident remains limited, and authorities have not publicly released further details about what occurred before the man’s fall.
