Rockland County, NY – Legislation introduced by Senator Elijah Reichlin-Melnick, Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski and Assemblyman Michael Lawler to rename a section of Route 45 in memory of the fallen firefighter was signed into law by Governor Hochul just before the July 4 weekend. Route 45 between New Hempstead Road and East Eckerson Road is now designated as “Firefighter Jared Lloyd Memorial Highway.” Road signs with the new name are expected to be unveiled later this year after they are installed by the NYS Department of Transportation.
“Jared Lloyd made the ultimate sacrifice, and preserving his memory by renaming a major road in his honor is one crucial way we can honor his heroic actions. When people drive along Route 45, they will always be reminded of that tragic day and the heroism of Firefighter Jared Lloyd. He was one of the first on the scene at the Evergreen Court Adult Home fire and helped save the lives of over 100 residents. His bravery and sacrifice will not be forgotten.” said Senator Reichlin-Melnick.
“Earlier this year, we announced our plans to rename a section of Route 45 in honor of Jared Lloyd, and I am proud to see this bill signed into law. Jared Lloyd served as a firefighter for over 15 years, and gave back so much to our community. By renaming this section of roadway in his honor, we will ensure that his legacy continues to live on and that his heroic sacrifice is not forgotten,” said Assemblyman Zebrowski.
“I was proud to work in a bipartisan fashion with Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski to rename a portion of State Route 45 after Rockland County’s fallen hero Jared Lloyd. We can never repay the debt we owe him and all other firefighters for their heroic service, but this tribute is a fitting honor for Jared and will serve as a solemn reminder of his sacrifice,” said Assemblyman Lawler.
The family of Jared Lloyd was pleased by the news that this tribute to their son will become a reality.
“We are truly grateful that Rockland County has recognized the impact that Jared has left on this community. And this renaming of the roadway confirms that,” said Jared’s mother Sabrail Davenport.
Jared’s father Calvin Lloyd said, “I’m delighted that the Governor has signed the bill and that the roadway is being renamed. The memory of my son is just so important, and I really appreciate what the Senator and Assemblymen have done to honor Jared.”
Jared Lloyd, a member of Columbian Fire Engine Co. No. 1 in Spring Valley for over 15 years, died during the rescue effort at the Evergreen Court Home for Adults fire on March 23, 2021 as he was attempting to save residents of the facility.
