HAVERSTRAW, NY – Rockland County marked the 23rd anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks with a solemn memorial ceremony in the Town of Haverstraw, inviting the community to join in remembrance. The event was held on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at 8:30 AM at Haverstraw Bay County Park.
County Executive Ed Day, along with family members, clergy, first responders, and other community leaders, gathered to honor the memory of those who lost their lives in the tragic events of 9/11. The ceremony included the reading of the names of Rockland County residents who perished that day, ensuring that their memory is kept alive within the community.
The observance features a series of tolling bells, each marking significant moments during the attacks. At 8:46 AM, a bell tolled in remembrance of the moment the North Tower of the World Trade Center was struck.
A second toll followed at 9:03 AM, marking the time when the South Tower was hit. Additional bells tolled in honor of the attack on the Pentagon, the crash of Flight 93 in Shanksville, PA, the collapse of both the South and North Towers, and the 1993 World Trade Center bombing.
The early morning 8:15 AM ceremony serveed not only as a reminder of the tragic events but also as a testament to the enduring strength and unity of the Rockland County community.
