Woman Dies in Spring Valley Vehicle Accident

October 20, 2026  •  By Lara Seymour

Spring Valley, NY – A 58-year-old woman died after being struck by her own vehicle on North Main Street in Spring Valley on Friday, October 16, 2026. Spring Valley Police released information about the fatal accident on Monday, October 19, as investigators continued reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident.

According to police, the accident occurred at approximately 5:22 p.m. near 175 North Main Street. Officers were dispatched to the location following a report of a motor vehicle accident involving a pedestrian.

When officers arrived, they spoke with a witness who reported that a woman had been struck by her own vehicle.

Police located the woman unresponsive and immediately began emergency lifesaving measures.

The victim was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern for medical treatment. Despite those efforts, she later died from her injuries.

Investigators determined that the woman had exited her vehicle without realizing that its transmission remained in reverse.

According to the police account, she subsequently attempted to get back inside the vehicle. During that attempt, the vehicle struck her, resulting in injuries that proved fatal.

Police have not publicly identified the woman. Her name and additional personal information had not been released as of Monday evening, October 19.

The department has also not disclosed the make or model of the vehicle, the reason the woman initially exited it, or what caused her to attempt to reenter it.

Although investigators have described the sequence of events leading to the collision, additional details about the vehicle’s movement and the circumstances immediately preceding the accident have not been made public.

The available police account does not establish whether the vehicle was on a public roadway, in a parking area, or in another location when the woman exited.

Authorities have not announced whether surveillance footage was recovered or whether additional witnesses have been interviewed.

The incident is being handled by the Spring Valley Police Department, which is requesting assistance from members of the public who may have information about what occurred.

Police are particularly interested in information that could help investigators further establish the circumstances surrounding the collision.

Anyone who witnessed the accident or possesses relevant information is encouraged to contact the Spring Valley Police Department at 845-356-7400.

Information may also be submitted by email to tips@villagespringvalley.org.

The department is headquartered at 200 North Main Street in Spring Valley, a short distance from the reported accident location.

The accident occurred during the late afternoon, although authorities have not indicated whether roadway traffic, visibility, weather conditions, or mechanical factors played a role.

No determination involving any of those potential factors has been publicly announced.

The woman’s death was reported by police as resulting from injuries sustained when her own vehicle struck her. The available information does not establish that another driver or vehicle was involved.

As of October 20, additional information concerning the woman’s identity, the vehicle involved, and the final findings of the investigation had not been independently confirmed.

The Spring Valley Police Department continues to request information from anyone who may be able to assist with the investigation.
