Wesley Hills, NY – A 38-year-old Suffern woman was killed Monday morning in a crash involving a passenger vehicle and a garbage truck on Route 202 in Wesley Hills, according to information released by the Ramapo Police Department.
The crash occurred near the intersection of Route 202 and Wilder Road on Monday, Sept. 28. Emergency personnel were called to the area at approximately 10:30 a.m. following reports of a serious motor vehicle crash.
Police said the woman was driving a Nissan involved in the collision. Her name had not been publicly released as of Monday afternoon.
A male passenger traveling in the Nissan was also injured. Emergency crews worked to remove the occupants from the passenger vehicle, and the man was transported to a hospital for treatment. Initial reports indicated he was taken to Westchester Medical Center. His condition had not been publicly released as of the latest available updates.
The female driver was pronounced dead following the crash.
The driver of the garbage truck was screened for possible drug and alcohol impairment following the collision, according to police. The screening was negative.
Authorities have not announced what caused the crash, and no information released as of Monday afternoon established fault. The circumstances leading to the collision remain under investigation.
The crash prompted an extended closure of Route 202 while police investigated the scene. Route 202 was closed between Lime Kiln Road and Route 306, restricting traffic through a section of the Wesley Hills area as investigators and emergency crews worked at the location.
The intersection of Route 202 and Wilder Road is located in the Village of Wesley Hills within the Town of Ramapo. Route 202 is a major east-west roadway through northern Ramapo and connects communities including Suffern, Montebello, Wesley Hills and areas farther east.
Multiple emergency agencies responded to the crash. Initial reports from the scene indicated that both occupants of the passenger vehicle were trapped following the collision, requiring an extrication operation before the surviving passenger could be transported for medical treatment.
Police had not released additional information about the garbage truck driver or the company operating the truck as of the latest reports.
Authorities also had not publicly detailed the direction in which either vehicle was traveling immediately before the collision, the sequence of events that led to the impact or whether speed, road conditions or any other factors contributed to the crash.
The collision occurred two days after a powerful nor’easter brought heavy rain, wind, fallen trees and widespread power outages to portions of Rockland County. However, authorities have not indicated that weather or road conditions played any role in Monday’s crash.
