TAPPAN, NY — A motorcyclist was killed Sunday afternoon following a collision with an SUV at the intersection of Route 303 and Campbell Avenue in Tappan, according to the Orangetown Police Department. The crash remains under investigation, and authorities are asking anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward with information.
Police said the collision occurred at approximately 12:53 p.m. on July 26. A preliminary investigation determined that a 2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling south on Route 303 and attempted to make a left turn onto Campbell Avenue when it collided with a northbound 2025 Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
Emergency responders from multiple agencies arrived at the scene within minutes. The motorcyclist sustained critical injuries and was transported to Montefiore Nyack Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Officials have not released the rider’s identity, pending notification of family members.
Authorities reported that no other injuries resulted from the crash. Police also said a third vehicle, identified as a 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander, was stopped at the intersection at the time of the collision but was not directly involved in the incident.
The Orangetown Police Department’s Accident Investigation Team is leading the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. As part of that effort, investigators are examining evidence from the scene and working to determine the sequence of events leading up to the collision. No information has been released regarding whether speed, impairment, distraction, or other contributing factors played a role.
Traffic in the area was significantly affected while emergency crews responded and investigators documented the scene. Portions of Route 303 near the intersection with Campbell Avenue were temporarily closed, and motorists were advised to avoid the area until the roadway reopened.
Several emergency agencies assisted with the response, including the Tappan Fire Department, South Orangetown Ambulance Corps, Rockland County Paramedics, and the Rockland County Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Criminal Investigation. Their efforts included providing emergency medical care, securing the crash scene, assisting with traffic control, and supporting the ongoing investigation.
Police are continuing to seek information from the public as the investigation progresses.
