HEALTH DEPARTMENT OFFERS FREE MOSQUITO CONTROL PRODUCTS TO KEEP POOLS & OUTDOOR SPAS MOSQUITO FREE

NEW CITY, NY, – To help County residents reduce the number of mosquitoes on their property, Rockland County Executive Ed Day and County Health Commissioner Dr. Patricia Schnabel Ruppert announce the availability of free Mosquito Control Products for the 2021 Season.

Mosquito Dunks® will be available, free of charge, for curbside pickup at the Robert L. Yeager Health Complex, 50 Sanatorium Road in Pomona. Dunks must be ordered in advance by calling (845) 364-3173 or e-mailing wnv@co.rockland.ny.us to arrange a date and time for pick up, while supplies last. Visit the Mosquito Control webpage at http://bit.ly/2aXY0E4 for details and download and print a DUNK GIVEAWAY FORM. Please bring the completed and signed form to the pickup location on the arranged day/time.

Mosquito Dunks® are small, donut-shaped objects that float on standing water and release bacteria that kill mosquitoes during their larval stage of development before they become flying, biting adults. The Health Department provides them to County residents to use in closed or unused private swimming pools and spas. Dunks are effective on wet surfaces for approximately 30 days. A single dunk will treat an area of about 100 square feet of standing water. ALWAYS FOLLOW THE LABEL INSTRUCTIONS when using Mosquito Dunks® or any other pesticide. It is important to know the approximate dimensions of your pool/spa to ensure that you get the correct number of dunks for effective treatment.

Fathead minnows will be available for one day only, and they must be ordered in advance. The fish will be available for pick-up on Thursday, April 22, from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm at the Robert L. Yeager Health Complex, 50 Sanatorium Road in Pomona. Follow the “Free Dunk/Fish” signs from Sanatorium Road to the giveaway location. Please visit our website on the day of the event to confirm that the giveaway will take place as scheduled. The Health Department will provide the required permits to allow you to stock the fish within Rockland County. The fish will be in a sealed bag for transport. Please bring a bucket or small cooler. To order the minnows, call (845) 364-3173 or visit http://bit.ly/2na0BSGPlease order by April 19th.

Fathead minnows are a type of fish that eat mosquito larvae before they become flying, biting adults. They can eat up to 200 mosquito larvae per day. The fish can be placed in unused swimming pools, ornamental ponds, and other similar areas that have a minimum of eight inches of water. It is not necessary to stock streams and rivers with these fish, as mosquitoes generally do not lay eggs in moving water. If fish, frogs, and/or salamanders are already present in the area of concern, it is unnecessary to add the minnows, as the existing animal population should provide appropriate mosquito control.

“The Mosquito Dunks® & fathead minnow giveaways are a perfect way for all of us to take action to help control the mosquito population and protect ourselves and the community from vector-borne diseases. We encourage residents to take advantage of these free mosquito control products. Remember, the most effective mosquito control begins in your own backyard, so be sure to check around your property for any items that can hold water and store them in a manner that prevents them from collecting water,” said Dr. Ruppert.

“This program is a perfect way for all of us to take action to help control the mosquito population and protect ourselves and the community from vector-borne diseases. Our Health Department will keep their head on a swivel to ensure we are protected against all health threats,” said County Executive Day.

TOWN OF STONY POINT SIGNS CONTRACT TO SELL FORMER LETCHWORTH PROPERTY AND PATRIOT HILLS GOLF COURSE TO PRIVATE INVESTORS

Deal Includes Remediation of Letchworth Property, Millions in Savings for Taxpayers, Construction of New Community Center, Resident Access to Upgraded Golf Course Facilities

STONY POINT, NY — In a deal that will realize one of the largest private investments in the Town of Stony Point in decades and millions in savings for taxpayers, Town officials announced today at a press conference that they have signed a contract for the sale of the former Letchworth Village property and Patriot Hills Golf Course. The developer, Patriot Hills Park LLC, intends to invest in the remediation and redevelopment of the site of the former state institution as well as upgrades to the golf course, clubhouse, and catering facilities.

“This is an exciting day and big win for Stony Point,” stated Town Supervisor Jim Monaghan at the press conference on the golf course. “As far back as 2003, the town has actively worked to market the old Letchworth facility and today’s agreement will finally ensure both the revitalization of this property and the enhancement of this beautiful golf course for benefit of our taxpayers.”

“This deal means millions in benefits to our taxpayers immediately and helps strengthen the long-term fiscal health of the Town that will enable us to keep town taxes down,” said Councilman and Deputy Supervisor Tom Basile.  “This contract will at long last allow this site to generate income rather than be a drain on resources and do it while maintaining the character of this community.”

The purchasers have also agreed to fund the design and construction of a new Stony Point Community Center to replace the current RHO Building on the Letchworth site, which is in constant need of repair. The new community center will provide facilities for senior citizen functions, official town meetings and a range of other uses.

“I, along with my partners, look forward to the success of this project and the exciting possibilities and economic growth that it will bring to Stony Point,” stated Raja Amar of Patriot Hills LLC. “As a resident of Stony Point, I have a personal interest in investing in our future for the benefit of our community and its residents.”  Amar and his partners have been in negotiations with Town officials for more than three years.

Key elements of the contract include:

  • $6.4 million due at closing encompassing both cash payment and performance bond for the design and construction of a new Stony Point Community Center.
  • $6 million estimated commitment from the developer to remediate and demolish buildings on the Letchworth site.
  • Renovations to and the preservation of Kirkbride Hall for Town recreation purposes.
  • Golf course will remain accessible to Town residents and their guests.
  • Stony Point active riding volunteer fire department and ambulance corps members will play for free.
  • Deal encompasses both all buildings on the former Letchworth site as well as the catering facility and current golf course.

The Patriot Hills golf course has been consistently subsidized by town taxpayers by an average of more than $1.3 million per year for the last five years. The savings for Stony Point taxpayers will be significant including eliminating the need for an estimated $7 million in projected additional expenditures and debt for golf course capital improvements, renovation of the catering facility and maintenance for the dilapidated Letchworth buildings.

“The golf course has been a drag on our finances for years that has prevented us from investing in other priorities,” said Monaghan. “This deal will enable us to direct resources toward other critical needs.”

The company intends to begin work on upgrading the golf facilities as soon as possible. Following remediation of the Letchworth property, any development plans would proceed in accordance with all applicable Town planning and zoning processes.
