Winter Storm Warning in Effect for Rockland County

February 12, 2024  •  By helpdesk1

The US National Weather Service in New York, NY, has issued a winter storm warning for the Lower Hudson Valley, including all of Rockland County, as a powerful winter storm approaches from the southwest. This significant weather event is expected to impact the area starting tonight, continuing through tomorrow evening.

Snowfall Predictions:

  • Interior Northeast New Jersey, Lower Hudson Valley, including Rockland County, and Interior Southern Connecticut: Expect heavy, wet snow. Total snowfall amounts are forecasted to range from 8 to 12 inches, with locally higher amounts possible, especially north of Interstate 84. Snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour are possible late tonight into Tuesday, making travel hazardous, particularly during the Tuesday morning commute.
  • NYC Metro and Long Island: Snowfall totals of 5 to 8 inches, with locally higher amounts, can lead to challenging travel conditions, especially during the Tuesday morning commute. Snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour are expected.

Storm Overview:

A deepening low-pressure system is forecasted to approach the region tonight and will pass to the south and east of Long Island on Tuesday. This storm is predicted to bring moderate to heavy snowfall across the area, with rain transitioning to a mix of rain and snow, eventually turning to all snow even down to coastal regions. Accompanying the snowfall will be gusty winds, with potential minor to moderate coastal flooding impacts.

Recent Updates:

  • A Winter Storm Watch is now in effect for New York City, Long Island, and parts of Northeast New Jersey.
  • Winter storm warnings have been expanded to include the remainder of the area through tomorrow evening.

Wind Forecasts:

Northeast to North winds are forecasted at 15 to 25 mph, with gusts reaching 25 to 40 mph on Tuesday, particularly closer to the coast.

Safety Advice:

Residents are urged to prepare for the storm by ensuring they have emergency supplies, such as food, water, and medications. It is also crucial to keep flashlights and batteries on hand in case of power outages. Travel is strongly discouraged; if travel is unavoidable, ensure your vehicle is winter-ready, and keep an emergency kit in your car. Stay informed by monitoring local weather reports and adhere to instructions from local authorities.
