Nyack, NY — A domestic violence investigation in Nyack escalated into a multi-agency police response late Sunday night after authorities said a woman barricaded herself inside an apartment following a reported stabbing incident.
According to the Orangetown Police Department, officers were called to Nyack Hospital at approximately 10:10 p.m. on May 24 after a man arrived at the emergency room with stab wounds. Investigators later determined the injuries were connected to a domestic dispute that allegedly occurred inside an apartment on Bridge Street in Nyack.
Police identified the suspect as 44-year-old Fabiola Demosthene of Nyack. Authorities allege that Demosthene stabbed the male victim during the dispute before retreating into the apartment and refusing to come out when officers arrived.
The situation led Orangetown Police to request assistance from the Rockland County REACT/SWAT Team and the county’s Crisis Negotiation Team. Officials said negotiators attempted to communicate with the suspect for several hours while emergency personnel secured the surrounding area.
Residents in the neighborhood reported seeing a significant law enforcement presence overnight, including armored vehicles, tactical officers, ambulances, and additional emergency response units. Portions of the surrounding streets were temporarily affected as authorities worked to contain the incident safely. The response also included members of the Rockland County Sheriff’s Office Drone Unit and Bureau of Criminal Investigation, as well as Congers-Valley Cottage Volunteer Ambulance Corps and Rockland County paramedics.
Police said the standoff ended after the REACT/SWAT Team entered the apartment and took Demosthene into custody without further injuries being reported. Authorities stated the suspect was later charged with first-degree assault, a felony offense under New York law, and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a misdemeanor.
Following her arrest, Demosthene was arraigned in Nyack Justice Court and remanded to the Rockland County Jail pending further legal proceedings, according to police. Officials have not publicly released additional information regarding the condition of the victim.
The investigation remains ongoing. Authorities have not indicated whether additional charges may be filed or whether any prior incidents were connected to the individuals involved.
Domestic violence advocates frequently note that incidents involving weapons and barricaded suspects can create heightened risks for both victims and responding officers. Law enforcement agencies throughout Rockland County have increasingly relied on specialized response teams and crisis negotiators in situations involving armed or emotionally volatile individuals.
The incident drew significant attention locally due to the size of the emergency response and the overnight activity in the village’s downtown area. Videos and photos from the scene circulated on social media throughout Monday morning as residents sought updates on the situation.
Police are asking anyone with additional information related to the incident to contact the Orangetown Police Department.
