New City, NY – Rockland County has officially launched a Citizen Advisory Committee (CAC) to assist in updating its Countywide Comprehensive Plan, a vital initiative aimed at shaping the county’s long-term growth and development. The effort will be led by the Rockland County Planning Department, with input from both the CAC and a Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) to ensure a balance of community engagement and expert guidance.
The first meeting of the Citizen Advisory Committee will take place on:
- Date: Wednesday, March 19, 2025
- Time: 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
- Location: New City Library, High Tor Meeting Room, 220 North Main St., New City, NY
While this is a working session for committee members, the public is encouraged to attend, and an opportunity will be provided for residents to voice their concerns and suggestions.
Rockland County Executive Ed Day emphasized the importance of community participation, stating that the updated Comprehensive Plan will play a crucial role in ensuring a high quality of life for current and future residents.
“The preparation, adoption, and implementation of an updated Comprehensive Plan is one of the highest priorities for this county,” said Day. “This update is essential to shaping a unified vision for Rockland County as a whole, and we thank all those who have stepped up to serve on this important committee.”
The CAC is composed of a diverse group of community members who will help guide public engagement efforts, ensuring that the concerns and priorities of residents are incorporated into the final plan.
Acting Commissioner of Planning Doug Schuetz highlighted the committee’s key role in gathering input and fostering transparency throughout the process.
“This committee is crucial to the creation and implementation of the community and stakeholder engagement strategy for this project,” Schuetz said. “We are excited to work with county residents to shape Rockland’s future.”
The Countywide Comprehensive Plan serves as a blueprint for future land use, zoning decisions, and infrastructure development. The update will also address key issues such as:
- Economic growth
- Housing and affordability
- Water resources and climate resilience
- Transportation and infrastructure
- Sustainability and hazard mitigation
- Community livability and quality of life
Rockland’s last comprehensive plan, “Rockland Tomorrow”, was adopted in 2011. Since then, significant changes in demographics, development trends, and environmental policies have necessitated a reevaluation of the county’s long-term goals.
The 18-month project will be conducted in partnership with BFJ Planning, a New York-based consulting firm, along with Urbanomics, Arch Street Communications, and McLaren Engineering.
Residents are encouraged to attend CAC meetings, provide input, and stay engaged throughout the planning process. The county is committed to transparency and community involvement, ensuring that the final plan reflects the needs and aspirations of all Rockland residents.
