Nyack, NY – Elizabeth Mitchell, a 45-year-old Nyack resident, pleaded guilty to multiple charges related to a fatal accident that occurred on June 9, 2024, including aggravated vehicular homicide, manslaughter, and leaving the scene of the incident. The plea was made in Rockland County Court in exchange for a sentence of 7 to 21 years in state prison, with the possibility of a maximum sentence of 8 1/3 to 25 years.
The incident unfolded when Mitchell, under the influence of alcohol, drove at speeds nearing 70 mph in a 30 mph zone. Her reckless driving caused her to lose control of the vehicle, run a stop sign, and crash into a metal barrier and fence. Despite the catastrophic injuries sustained by her passengers, Mitchell fled the scene, never reporting the crash.
As a result of her actions, the front-seat passenger, Jahaad Muhammad, tragically lost his life, while the rear passenger, Devonte Jones, suffered serious injuries. The crash was later investigated by the Orangetown Police Department.
Rockland County District Attorney Thomas E. Walsh, II, said, “The actions of the defendant on that day resulted in the death and serious injury of two passengers in her vehicle. Traffic laws are in place to protect all drivers and their passengers. The defendant’s disregard for human life and law enforcement will now be met with accountability.”
Mitchell’s history also includes multiple prior driving under the influence convictions from California, one of which involved a hit-and-run. Her actions on the night of June 9, 2024, led to irreversible consequences, and she will now face justice for her reckless behavior.
The case was prosecuted by Supervising Assistant District Attorney Meghan Garvey and Executive Assistant District Attorney Michael Dugandzic. Mitchell is scheduled to be sentenced by Honorable Djinsad Desir on July 22, 2025.
District Attorney Walsh extended his condolences to the family and friends of the deceased and wished for the continued recovery of the injured passenger.
