CHESTNUT RIDGE, N.Y. โ The Village of Chestnut Ridge has been awarded approximately $568,000 in state funding to support traffic and pedestrian safety improvements along South Pascack Road, a heavily traveled corridor that serves residents, businesses and nearby schools.
The funding was announced as part of New York State’s ongoing efforts to improve roadway safety and reduce accidents involving pedestrians, cyclists and motorists. Village officials said the grant will allow Chestnut Ridge to move forward with infrastructure upgrades designed to improve safety and accessibility along the roadway.
According to state and local officials, the project is expected to include a variety of improvements intended to make South Pascack Road safer for all users. While final project plans are still being developed, potential enhancements may include upgraded crosswalks, new pedestrian signals, improved signage, traffic-calming measures and other infrastructure designed to improve visibility and reduce the risk of crashes.
South Pascack Road is one of the village’s primary transportation corridors and experiences significant vehicle and pedestrian traffic throughout the day. Residents have raised concerns in recent years regarding speeding, pedestrian access and the challenges faced by individuals attempting to cross the roadway, particularly during busy travel periods.
The state funding was awarded through a competitive grant process that provides financial assistance to municipalities seeking to improve transportation infrastructure and increase roadway safety. Communities across New York State submitted proposals for projects that address local traffic concerns, improve pedestrian access and create safer connections between neighborhoods, schools and commercial areas.
Village officials said the funding will allow Chestnut Ridge to undertake improvements that might otherwise have required a significant local financial commitment. Grant programs such as this are intended to help municipalities complete projects that enhance public safety while limiting the financial burden on local taxpayers.
The safety improvements are also expected to benefit residents who walk or bike along the corridor, including children traveling to school, senior citizens and individuals with mobility challenges. Transportation planners increasingly emphasize the importance of designing roads that safely accommodate all users rather than focusing exclusively on vehicle traffic.
Although a timeline for construction has not yet been announced, officials said the next steps will include engineering, planning and community input before any work begins. Residents may have opportunities to provide feedback as project designs are finalized.
State transportation officials have noted that roadway safety projects have become a growing priority in recent years as communities seek ways to reduce traffic-related injuries and fatalities. Investments in pedestrian infrastructure, including crosswalk improvements, signal upgrades and traffic-calming measures, have become increasingly common throughout New York.
The grant award represents one of several recent infrastructure investments made in Rockland County and reflects broader efforts to modernize local transportation systems and improve safety for residents and visitors alike.
Village leaders said the funding is expected to provide long-term benefits by creating a safer and more accessible transportation corridor while supporting future growth and mobility needs within the community.
Construction schedules and additional details about the South Pascack Road improvement project are expected to be announced after the planning and design phases are completed.
