NEW CITY, NY – Rockland County commemorated International Human Rights Day with an Interfaith Forum hosted by County Executive Ed Day and Human Rights Commissioner Spencer Chiimbwe. The event, held at the Pomona Health Complex, celebrated the County’s diversity and commitment to safeguarding human rights while fostering dialogue among faith leaders, advocates, and community members.
“Rockland County’s strength lies in its diversity,” said County Executive Day. “This interfaith forum highlights the shared values that unite us and serves as a reminder that we all have a role to play in safeguarding the rights and dignity of every individual.”
Inspiring Messages and Community Dialogue
The forum was emceed by Paul Adler, Esq., a former inductee of the Rockland County Civil & Human Rights Hall of Fame. Bishop John Bonnici, Episcopal Vicar for Rockland and Westchester Counties, delivered the keynote address, emphasizing the critical role faith communities play in addressing inequities and fostering a culture of mutual respect.
A dynamic fireside chat followed, moderated by Tara Rosenblum, an award-winning journalist from News 12. Panelists included:
- Rabbi Ariel Russo of Congregation Sons of Israel in Nyack,
- Rev. Melvin Mungin of the Rockland Ministerial Alliance, and

Discussions centered on faith’s intersection with human rights, with panelists offering strategies to combat discrimination, promote inclusion, and address social inequities collaboratively.
Proclaiming Universal Human Rights Month
As part of the event, County Executive Day declared December as Universal Human Rights Month in Rockland County. This proclamation underscores Rockland’s dedication to protecting dignity, equality, and the inalienable rights of its residents, aligning with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted on December 10, 1948.
The initiative serves as a call to action for residents to engage in local efforts promoting human rights throughout December and beyond.
