Congratulations to Clarkstown’s newest Eagle Scout, Gregory Voce

Supervisor Hoehmann attended the ceremony unveiling his project at the William E. Debevoise Jr. American Legion post. Greg’s project was to memorialize the World War II Army Troop Transport Ship Dorchester that was sunk near Greenland on February 3, 1943. The Dorchester became famous because of the “Four Chaplains” who were aboard and selflessly assisted soldiers evacuate and then gave their life vests to others as the ship was going down. The chaplains, a priest, rabbi and two ministers, were last seen arms locked together in prayer on the bow of the ship as it went down. Greg Voce raised money for a bronze plaque and plantings that were installed at the American Legion Post 1682 in New City across from Town Hall. Greg’s Great-Grandfather was one of the over 700 soldiers on the Dorchester who died with only 225 pulled from the water in the frigid North Atlantic.
