Pomona, NY – Mark Hanok, the enduring and trusted meteorologist whose voice became a daily weather voice for a generation of Rockland County residents, passed away earlier this week. He was best known for his decades-long tenure at WRCR Radio, where his accurate forecasts and signature long-range winter outlooks became a beloved tradition for listeners across the region.
For over 50 years, Hanok dedicated himself to environmental services and weather forecasting, helping Rocklanders prepare for everything from daily commutes to powerful winter storms. Even as his health declined in recent years, Hanok remained deeply committed to his work, often broadcasting from his home office to continue serving the community he loved.
Hanok began his meteorological journey with a deep passion for environmental science, earning a B.S. in Anthropology from Purchase College in 1988, followed by a Master’s degree in Literacy from SUNY Oneonta in 2002. He began working as an interpretive meteorologist in 1989, a role he held for over three decades. His work at WRCR Radio, spanning from 1999 to 2012, defined a critical chapter in his career. Listeners affectionately knew him for his precise forecasting and his unique, engaging style that brought both warmth and reliability to the airwaves.
His contributions extended beyond forecasting. At WRCR, he was known as the station’s “quirky and very accurate meteorologist,” part of a small but vibrant news team that worked tirelessly to keep the community informed—even during emergencies like Hurricane Sandy, when the station ran on generators and grit to provide critical updates.
A cherished colleague and friend of many, Hanok’s voice was more than just a weather report—it was a connection to home for thousands. His long-range winter forecasts, eagerly awaited each year by loyal listeners, were often cited as key planning tools by families and local businesses alike. Even when illness made live appearances difficult, Hanok would ensure his forecasts reached the community, a testament to his unwavering sense of duty.
Comments poured in on local social media groups in memoriam of Hanok. County Executive Ed Day, stated “A kinder and gentler soul you would not find. Rest in Peace, Mark.” Karen M., stated “My mother listened to WRKL faithfully every morning. She enjoyed listening to Mark Hanok’s weather reports because they were so accurate.” and Jeff Lewis, who worked closely with Hanok in several WRCR studios, stated “Mark (helped) Rocklanders get their days started and figure out what their weekends would be like with incredibly accurate weather forecasts and his always-appreciated long range winter forecasts. May he rest in peace.”
Outside of meteorology, Hanok also served as a remedial reading teacher at Woodlands Middle School, demonstrating a lifelong dedication to education and literacy. His intellectual curiosity and academic accomplishments were complemented by personal interests in both Purchase College and SUNY Oneonta, institutions he proudly followed and supported throughout his life.
A private ceremony was held for Mark last week.
Mark Hanok leaves behind a legacy of public service, dedication to science, and community connection. His presence on the airwaves may be gone, but his impact on the hearts and routines of Rockland County will long endure.
