SUFFERN, NY— Local firefighters had the opportunity to conduct a rare full-scale training drill Monday at a building in the northern area of the Village of Suffern that has remained vacant since a major fire three years ago.
The building’s new owner granted permission for the exercise ahead of planned renovations, allowing crews to practice response tactics in a real structural environment. Officials say such opportunities are valuable, as buildings scheduled for redevelopment offer training scenarios that cannot be easily replicated.
Village representatives, including the Fire Department, Building Department, and Department of Public Works, coordinated a safety plan prior to the drill to ensure the site was secure and training could be carried out safely.
Both the Suffern Fire Department and the Tallman Fire Department participated, with senior personnel overseeing exercises and offering instruction to newer members. Leaders described the training as successful and beneficial in preparing firefighters for future emergencies.
Village officials expressed appreciation to the participating fire departments and the new property owner for supporting local emergency preparedness efforts. They emphasized that ongoing training remains a key part of maintaining community safety.
