Congers, NY – This week, the Congers community came together to celebrate a remarkable milestone—the 100th birthday of Al Magnatta, a beloved resident and dedicated public servant whose life has been defined by service, bravery, and commitment.
Magnatta, a World War II veteran, served in the Army Air Corps as a tail gunner, flying 25 combat missions over Europe. After his military service, he continued his dedication to protecting others by joining the Congers Fire Department in 1946. Over the decades, he played a pivotal role in the department, serving as chief from 1960 to 1962 before becoming Rockland County Assistant Fire Coordinator in 1962, a position he held for an astounding 58 years until his retirement in 2020.
Even at 100 years old, Magnatta remains an active member of the Congers Fire Department, embodying a lifelong commitment to his community. To honor his extraordinary service, local officials, including Town of Clarkstown Supervisor George Hoehmann and Clarkstown Councilman Graziano, joined Magnatta’s family and fellow firefighters in a heartfelt ceremony celebrating his life and contributions.
“Al Magnatta is the definition of dedication,” said Hoehmann. “His service to our country, our county, and our community is truly inspiring. It is an honor to celebrate this milestone with him.”
As the community reflects on Magnatta’s nearly eight decades of fire service and his heroic military contributions, his story continues to inspire younger generations. His legacy serves as a testament to the impact of selfless service, reminding everyone that dedication to helping others knows no age limit.
