Nanuet, NY –The first phase of restoration work at the historic Nanuet Cemetery, located on Middletown Road, has officially been completed. This significant project, aimed at preserving the rich history of the cemetery, was carried out by a professional cemetery rehabilitation company, with the work fully funded by a generous state grant.
As part of this first phase, approximately 200 headstones were restored, including those of veterans who served in wars dating back to the War of 1812. These efforts have helped maintain the dignity and respect of those who have contributed to the community and the country, ensuring that their legacies remain honored for future generations.
Looking ahead, the Town of Ramapo plans to continue its efforts to restore the cemetery. Volunteers and town staff will be working together to clean and restore additional historic headstones that date back 200 years. This ongoing effort will help preserve the cemetery as a landmark of local and national history.
In the coming months, the Town will provide updates on the notable figures buried in the cemetery, offering the community a chance to learn more about the people whose final resting place has been so carefully restored.
