STONY POINT, NY — In the early hours of Sunday, August 10, a devastating crash on North Liberty Drive claimed a young driver’s life and left a local business in ruins. Now, the Stony Point community is coming together to help rebuild what was lost.
Just before 1 a.m., police say a Toyota RAV4 traveling northbound lost control at the intersection of Ten Eyck Street. Surveillance video shows the SUV jumping a curb, flying across a parking lot, and slamming into the second floor of 52 North Liberty Drive — a mixed-use building with apartments above and Maguilar Deli Café on the first floor.
The impact damaged the building’s chimney and caused extensive structural harm. Five people sleeping upstairs escaped unharmed, but the driver, a 27-year-old man from Congers, was pronounced dead at the scene. The building has since been declared unsafe and unusable.
For Genser Marroquin, owner of Maguilar Deli Café, the accident was more than just a news headline — it was the sudden loss of his livelihood. Marroquin, a young entrepreneur, had opened the deli in early 2024 after years of saving and hard work. His café quickly became known not just for its food, but for the warm welcome he gave every customer.
Friends and supporters have launched a GoFundMe campaign to help Marroquin recover. The fundraiser describes him as “a hardworking and passionate young entrepreneur” who “created more than just a deli — he built a space where people felt at home.”
The appeal, shared in both English and Spanish to reach the diverse community he serves, tells the same heartfelt story: how Marroquin worked long hours, sacrificed personal comfort, and poured his savings into creating a neighborhood gathering place. Now, after the crash, he faces the uncertainty of whether he can reopen.
“Every dollar counts, and any support — whether it’s a donation or simply sharing this page — will help Genser get back on his feet,” the campaign reads. “Let’s come together and show him that the same community he served is here for him in his time of need.”
The message closes with a verse from 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18: “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
As of Monday afternoon, the fundraiser had raised just over $1800 toward its $22,000 goal. Organizers are encouraging people to contribute whatever they can and to share the campaign widely to give Marroquin the best chance of rebuilding.
