HUDSON RIVER – Sail freight schooner Apollonia has just started its fourth season of sustainable wind-powered sail freight. The vessel hauls cargoes to and from fifteen different ports on the Hudson River and in greater New York Harbor using very low carbon means (over 98% wind, current, and tide). The current “May run” is sponsored by Attentive Energy One, an offshore wind company that is also working to use the power of the wind for sustainable energy purposes.
“We’re excited to continue growing our green logistics network for sustainable movement of cargo in the Hudson Valley and New York Harbor this year,” said Captain Sam Merrett of schooner Apollonia. “This is our 12th round trip voyage to NYC and back, and we’re thrilled to have a chance to train new crewmembers.”
Starting from its homeport of Hudson, NY, Apollonia has achieved a number of new milestones on the present voyage:
- First cargo delivered to Carteret, NJ (malted barley from Hudson Valley Malt)
- Increased volume of green coffee beans to Tarrytown, NY (Coffee Labs Roasters)
- First upriver-bound Boat Boxes shipped from NYC (Tarrytown, Kingston, Hudson)
- New cargoes of sunflower oil (Fonte Puro), marina sauce (Michael’s of Brooklyn) Mac’s coffee spritz (Brooklyn Cannery), and upcycled soap (2nd Ground)
- New collaborations with electric vehicles for first- and last-mile assistance in Poughkeepsie and Brooklyn
The Attentive Energy One team visited the vessel when it called at One15 Marina in Brooklyn, New York.
“Apollonia is not just a beautiful vessel, but a tangible commitment to a greener future. ‘Powered by wind’ is a common theme for Attentive Energy and Apollonia. The operation is a part of a broader vision of regional sustainable logistics and transportation and will serve as a real-world reminder on how our region is connected one delivery at a time,” said Damian Bednarz, Managing Director, Attentive Energy One.
“Congratulations to the whole Apollonia crew on another successful cargo run,” said Wil Fisher, External Affairs Manager at Rise Light & Power, a joint venture partner in Attentive Energy One. “Rise Light & Power shares the mission of harnessing the wind for a sustainable future and we are proud to support this visionary team.”
