NEW CITY, NY – In light of the recent hostilities involving Israel and Hamas, the residents of New City, particularly the Jewish community in Rockland County, rallied together in a show of support for Israel. The event aimed to provide a platform for the community to express their concern and solidarity amidst the ongoing conflict, which began with a brutal, unprovoked attack by the terrorist organization Hamas.
On Tuesday, the assembly for thousands was held on the grounds of the Rockland County Courthouse.. The assembly, known as ‘The Candlelight Rally for Israel‘, was organized by the Jewish Federation & Foundation of Rockland County. The rally saw a diverse crowd including a significant representation from the local Jewish community, alongside individuals from various faiths and nationalities. Participants held placards bearing images of individuals reportedly taken hostage during the recent attacks, and the event featured a candle lighting ceremony accompanied by the playing of Israel’s emergency sirens, which resonated deeply with many attendees.
Residents shared their heartfelt concern for the innocent victims of the conflict, emphasizing a communal hope for the safety and well-being of those affected, especially the ones held hostage. The auditory illustration of the crisis through the sound of sirens played during the event brought home the reality of the situation for many, including Ruth Pernick, whose son and his family reside near Tel Aviv. The anxiety shared by attendees was palpable, as many have loved ones living in the conflicted regions, making the news and images from overseas a harrowing experience.
Expressions of sorrow, anxiety, and hope were shared amongst attendees, with individuals like Libby Tulin finding hope in the communal support and Brian Muni expressing relief for his daughter’s safe return from Israel while emphasizing the need for strength and action during these trying times.
The event also underscored the significant voice of Rockland’s Jewish population in Rockland County, reflecting a diverse range of Jewish traditions. Ari Rosenblum, the CEO of the Jewish Federation & Foundation of Rockland County, urged individuals to challenge antisemitism and announced the initiation of an Israel Emergency Appeal to provide assistance to Israelis during this challenging period.
Through candles, prayers, and communal togetherness, the Rockland County residents aimed to navigate through the emotional turmoil ignited by the ongoing crisis, vowing to continue their support until, as many expressed, their loved ones are safe.
The common thread of finding strength, advocating for action, and fostering a sense of togetherness ran through the expressions of the attendees. The heartfelt response from the community also highlighted an underlying resolve to continue standing in solidarity with Israel and their loved ones affected by the conflict, with indications that such gatherings are but the beginning of their collective stance.
