New proposed congressional maps didn’t undergo much of a change by the state Independent Redistricting Commission last week. Rockland’s Congressman Mike Lawler’s 17th District covering much of the Hudson Valley had a small change in a single town. The new map was created after the commission was ordered by the state Court of Appeals to come up with new lines after Republicans claimed gerrymandering by Democrats in the state legislature after the most recent census. Al Samuels heads up the Rockland Business Association, and he says it looks like this time the new maps could get the a-ok without the drama of previous attempts…
Congressman Lawler called on the state to pass the new maps quickly. Orange County State Senator James Skoufis called the map, which split Orange into two different districts, “a disgrace” and called on the Legislature to reject it.
The map approved the redistricting panel can be seen here.
