Today, a joint operation spearheaded by the Rockland County District Attorney’s Office, in collaboration with Homeland Security Investigations, various New York State agencies, and local law enforcement, executed a series of search warrants across Rockland County targeting smoke shops. This large-scale operation follows a meticulous year-long investigation into alleged illicit activities within these establishments.
Search warrants were carried out at seven locations across Rockland County, including two in the Town of Clarkstown, two in the Town of Orangetown, and one in the Village of Suffern. Additionally, search warrants were executed at a business and a private residence in the Town of Clarkstown.
According to District Attorney Thomas E. Walsh II, this extensive operation is a culmination of efforts to ensure that all businesses in Rockland County adhere to the law. What initially began as an investigation into unauthorized cannabis sales, potentially involving minors, expanded to uncover broader malpractices. Allegations suggest that these individuals not only engaged in illegal sales but also attempted to defraud the government of significant tax revenue.
Erin Keegan, Acting Special Agent in Charge of HSI New York, emphasized the collaborative nature of this operation and its critical importance in combating criminal activities with far-reaching consequences. The partnership between law enforcement agencies underscores the commitment to uphold justice and protect the community from such unlawful practices.
The investigation involved multiple agencies, including the Rockland County District Attorney’s Office, Homeland Security Investigations, New York State Tax and Finance, New York State Office of Cannabis Management, Clarkstown Police Department, Orangetown Police Department, and the Suffern Police Department.
It’s essential to remember that a criminal complaint is an accusation, and defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty. Nonetheless, today’s operation signals a significant step in holding accountable those who may have violated the law and underscores the commitment to safeguarding the integrity of business practices within Rockland County.
